August Issue

The monthly meeting for EAA chapter 890 was held last Saturday, August 11, at the Fort Payne FBO with about 2 dozen people attending.

CPR Class
Thanks to Bob Brown for coordinating a CPR class for area pilots. Sixteen people attended the class on August 1st, presented by the Fort Payne Fire Department.

We are still working on making a defibrillator available at the airport. The fire department may have several older models that they may be able to share. Bob Brown is working with Chapter President Harley McGatha to make a formal request to the city that the equipment be made available at this city-owned facility.

Trim problems
Barry Wigley flew is RV9 to Oshkosh this year and had a little more excitement when it came time to land than he had expected. He said, "It is Ray Allen Trim that is sold for many aircrafts. The problem was with a switch relay. They now sell a new relay that I replaced this weekend which appears to have corrected the problem. They wouldn’t say they had a problem with the first relay however they were quick to sell me the new relay at ½ price."

Garmin 430 upgrades
Those of you that own Garmin 430s and are considering an upgrade to include WAAS, don't delay. Garmin has announced that the price of the upgrade will double as of August 31st. The Wide Area Augmentation System can increase the accuracy of your GPS up to five times over a Non-WAAS receiver for vertical as well as horizontal navigation. Current cost of an upgrade is $1,500.

User Fees
The FAA proposals regarding user fees and their new funding plan was discussed. This is a proposal that all general aviation pilots should be concerned about. Please take the time to contact your Congressional delegation about this issue. Tell him you support HR2881 To learn more >> or visit http://www.aopa.org/faafundingdebate/act_now.html

Current FAA funding expires in September. It is important that we make our voices heard on this issue.

Christmas Party
Tenative date for the Christmas Party is set for December 8th (the second Saturday). This will replace the monthly meeting for December. Please send you ideas or location suggestions to Barry Wigley.
