Storms Damage Hangars
A quick moving storm moved through Sand Mountain and Fort Payne on Friday evening, June 29th. Strong winds and heavy rains left many of the hangar doors at Isbell Field hanging at odd angles and damaging several airplanes. The National Weather Service in Huntsville said it could not verify that a tornado touched down, and the damage was likely caused by straight-line winds that can attain 100 mph. "Even at 45 mph, the wind can be very destructive," said NWS meteorologist Steve Shumway.

Planes that were parked in the open or under the shade hangars largely escaped any damage. Several planes in hangars facing the runway were battered by hangar doors, and hangar doors on the backside were pushed out. Officials for the City of Fort Payne claim the city bears no fiscal responsibility for damage done to hangar contents. The city is slowly replacing the damaged doors. When asked about the damage the following morning, Mayor Bill Jordan said, "It looks pretty bad."

User Fees
The FAA proposals regarding user fees and their new funding plan was discussed. This is a proposal that all general aviation pilots should be concerned about. Please take the time to contact your Congressional delegation about this issue. To learn more >>

Current FAA funding expires in September. It is important that we make our voices heard on this issue.

2007 Calendar
